Elliotts Hill & Wolf Bog Windfarm Repowering

We have operated Elliots Hill Windfarm and Wolf Bog Windfarm for 30 years and 17 years, respectively, with the 15 operational turbines generating up to 15 megawatts of renewable power. The sites, in their current form, have consent to operate in perpetuity.

Location

Located within Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Northern Ireland, both the existing operational Elliots Hill Windfarm and Wolf Bog Windfarm are adjacent to one another; located approximately 7 km north-west of Ballyclare and 10 km south-east of Ballymena.

Current Stage

ScottishPower Renewables (UK) Limited (SPR) is seeking to repower the two operational windfarms, creating a more efficient site resulting in fewer wind turbines whilst generating a greater installed capacity. A request for a Scoping Opinion have been submitted to the local Council, please see the submitted ‘Project Documents’ section below.

Project History

Elliots Hill Windfarm was constructed in 1995 and Wolf Bog Windfarm in 2008, with a combined operating capacity of up to 15 megawatts (MW); repowering both sites into a single windfarm will consist of fewer wind turbines, approximately 5, with tip heights of up to 150m and the potential generating capacity of around 23 MW.

In April 2025, a temporary Meteorological Mast was installed on land at Elliots Hill Windfarm to gather data on wind conditions and other environmental factors at the site. Planning permission was granted by the local Council for the erection of this mast under planning reference LA02/2023/1870/F. At this early stage, SPR have also examined a number of environmental considerations, through both historical data and knowledge of the site and updated surveying, which has helped inform the design and development of the proposed repowering layout. We will be continuing to undertake further surveys to fully understand the sites potential for future development.

Community Consultation

Early consultation is key to the way SPR develops projects, and throughout the development process SPR seek to ensure local communities and stakeholders are given the opportunity to provide feedback and are kept informed of project progress.

SPR will be hosting Public Information Events to gain feedback on our proposals from the local community and to provide a better understanding of our vision for the proposed Development. Further information on the Public Information Events will be available in due course.

You can also contact the project team at any time via the project mailbox address noted in the "Contact" section below.

Benefits

As a responsible developer and operator of renewable energy, SPR believes the benefits of our projects should be shared with the communities in which we work.

During the operation of our onshore renewable energy developments, we create and support community benefit funds, empowering communities to control how this money is spent to best serve the needs of their local area. To date, SPR’s operational onshore windfarms have contributed almost £67.6 million to communities across the United Kingdom.

As part of this repowering project, SPR will work with the local communities to distribute the community benefit fund amongst neighbouring communities.

Community benefit funds have led to the delivery of a diverse range of projects, which include environmental improvements, educational programmes, heritage projects, the purchase of community transport vehicles, provision of life saving defibrillators, investment in energy efficiency measures within community buildings, and much more. Read more about how we engage with our communities here: Powering Communities.
