Green Knowes Windfarm Repowering
Location
Located within the Perth and Kinross Council area, Scotland, the operational Green Knowes Windfarm is approximately 4.1km south of Auchterarder and 1.75 km north of Glendevon. The proposed repowering windfarm will situate the same location as the operational Green Knowes Windfarm, extending approximately 940m further west and approximately 420m further east.
Current Stage
ScottishPower Renewables (UK) Limited (SPR) is seeking to repower the operational Green Knowes Windfarm, creating a more efficient site, resulting in fewer wind turbines whilst generating a much greater installed generating capacity. A request for Pre-Application and Environmental Assessment (EIA) Scoping advice to the Scottish Government Energy Consents Unit has been submitted. Copies of the submitted documentation can be found in the ‘Documents’ section of this webpage below.
Project History
The operational Green Knowes Windfarm received planning permission in June 2006 (reference: GMT1/47931.25) and has been operational since 2008. This planning permission will expire in December 2034. Currently, the operational Green Knowes Windfarm, produces up to 27 megawatts (MW) of green energy from 18 turbines. Repowering the site with fewer wind turbines, approximately 14, with a tip height of up to 200 metres, will allow for a potential generating capacity of 86.8 MW.
In additional to the operation Green Knowes Windfarm planning consent, a planning application was submitted for an extension. This application (reference: 15/02197/FLL) was submitted in 2015 and proposed the construction of 5 additional wind turbines and an extra 10 MW of installed capacity. However, following consultation with key stakeholders, this application was withdrawn in 2017.
In October 2025, a temporary meteorological mast was installed on site at the operational Green Knowes Windfarm to gather data on wind conditions and other environmental factors at the site. Planning permission was granted by Perth and Kinross Council for the erection of this mast under planning reference 25/00288/FLL. At this early stage, SPR have examined a number of environmental considerations, through historical data, knowledge of the site and updated surveying, which has helped inform the design of the proposed repowering layout. SPR will continue to undertake further surveys to fully understand the site’s potential for future development.
Community Consultation
Early consultation is key to the way SPR develops projects, and throughout the development process SPR seek to ensure local communities and stakeholders are given the opportunity to provide feedback and are kept informed of project progress.
SPR will be hosting Public Information Events to gain feedback on our proposal from the local community and to provide a better understanding of our vision for the proposed Development. Further information on the Public Information Events will be available in due course.

Benefits
As a responsible developer and operator of renewable energy, SPR believes the benefits of our projects should be shared with the communities in which we work.
During the operation of our onshore renewable energy developments, we create and support community benefit funds, empowering communities to control how this money is spent to best serve the needs of their local area. To date, SPR’s operational onshore windfarms have contributed over £75 million to communities across the United Kingdom, including Auchterarder and District Community Council area. These contributions have helped to fund projects such as the Sandy Gunn Memorial Garden, Auchterarder Community Sports and Recreation Cycle Without Age and the Merry-Go-Round Playgroup.
As part of this repowering project, SPR will work with the local communities to distribute the community benefit fund amongst neighbouring communities.
Community benefit funds have led to the delivery of a diverse range of projects, which include environmental improvements, educational programmes, heritage projects, the purchase of community transport vehicles, provision of life saving defibrillators, investment in energy efficiency measures within community buildings, and much more.
