Callagheen Windfarm Repowering
Callagheen Windfarm Repowering
Location
The proposed repower Site is composed of the operational Callagheen Windfarm in Northern Ireland, located approximately 6.3 kilometres from the Republic of Ireland border. The Site is approximately 5km northeast of Garrison, and approximately 2km south of Lower Lough Erne within the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council administrative area.
Current Stage
ScottishPower Renewables (UK) Limited (SPR) is seeking to repower the operational Callagheen Windfarm, creating a more efficient site, resulting in fewer wind turbines with a greater installed capacity. A request for Pre-Application and Environmental Assessment (EIA) Scoping Opinion to the Fermanagh & Omagh District Council has been submitted. Copies of the submitted documentation can be found in the ‘Documents’ section of this webpage below.
Project History
The operational Callagheen Windfarm is located within the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area in Northern Ireland. Planning permission (Reference: L/2001/1514/F) was granted in 2004 for a 25-year period following an appeal (Appeal Decision dated 8 April 2004; PAC Reference: 2003/A208). The wind farm was constructed in 2006 and is operated by ScottishPower Renewables. It comprises 13 Siemens wind turbines, each with a blade tip height of 93 metres, and has a total installed generating capacity of up to 17 MW. The site has been operational for approximately 20 years. Since 2007, ScottishPower Renewables has contributed over £325,000 to a community benefit fund associated with the wind farm, supporting a range of local projects.
Proposed Power
The proposed Development would continue to produce clean, renewable electricity on the Site. The repower would involve removing the existing 13 wind turbines and replacing them with up to 9 modern turbines, each reaching a maximum blade tip height of up to 180 m. The total installed capacity of the repowered site would be up to 54 MW, representing an approximately threefold increase in the wind farm’s generating capacity.
| Operational Site | Proposed Repowered Development | |
| Number of turbines | 13 | Up to 9 |
| Height of turbine to blade tip | 93 m | Up to 180 |
| Type of turbine | Three blades, horizontal axis. | Three bladed, horizontal axis. |
| Total repowered windfarm generation capacity | 17MW | Up to 54MW |
In November 2025, a temporary meteorological mast was installed on site at the operational Callagheen Windfarm to gather data on wind conditions and other environmental factors at the Site. Planning permission was granted by the local authority for the erection of this mast under planning reference LA10/2025/0055/F.
At this early stage, SPR have examined a number of environmental considerations, through historical data, knowledge of the site and updated surveying, which has helped inform the design of the proposed repowering layout. SPR will continue to undertake further surveys to fully understand the site’s potential for future development.
Community Consultation
Early consultation is key to the way SPR develops projects, and throughout the development process SPR seek to ensure local communities and stakeholders are given the opportunity to provide feedback and are kept informed of project progress.
We intend to host the first of a number of Public Information Days (PIDs) within the local community administrative areas shortly. Further details on dates, times and locations will be shared in due course.
Consultation feedback combined with findings from environmental surveys and technical studies is vital in shaping the design of the proposed development submitted to the local planning authority in Northern Ireland.

Benefit
As a responsible developer and operator of renewable energy, SPR believes the benefits of our projects should be shared with the communities in which we work.
To date, SPR’s operational onshore windfarms have contributed over £75 million to communities across the United Kingdom, including Fermanagh and Omagh.
As part of this repowering project, SPR will continue to offer a community benefit for the benefit of neighbouring and local communities.
Community benefit funds have led to the delivery of a diverse range of projects across the UK, which include environmental improvements, educational programmes, heritage
projects, the purchase of community transport vehicles, provision of life saving defibrillators, investment in energy efficiency measures within community buildings, and much more.
The current Callagheen Windfarm community benefit fund has contributed to a range of local projects over the operational life of the windfarm, including Belleek Men’s Shed, Cashel Community Association and Garrison Community Gym.
