Video Title: Repowering Animation
VO: For over 20 years, ScottishPower Renewables have owned and operated wind farms throughout the UK and Ireland, which today generate over three gigawatts of clean green renewable energy every year. As some of these assets reach the end of their operational life, we have an opportunity to unlock more clean energy, create more green jobs and increase the UK's energy security through the repowering of these wind farms. So, what is repowering? Our first wind farm, Carland Cross in Cornwall, was commissioned in 1992 and its 15 400-kilowatt turbines produced enough electricity to meet the demand of 3300 homes for over 20 years. In 2013,taking advantage of advances in wind turbine technology, ScottishPower Renewables replaced the existing turbines with ten new turbines, repowering the wind farm with enough generating capacity to power the equivalent of 12,000 homes. Since then, Scottish Power Renewables have gone on to repower several wind farms, sometimes adding as much as ten times their original capacity. And we have plans to repower even more. We also look at ways retired turbines can be reusedsustainably for purposes such as research and training or materials being recycled and restored into assets like bus shelters and reusable components. Repowering our wind farms not only unlocks more renewable energy and green jobs, it enables more supply chain opportunities. It generates more community benefit funding, enabling them to drive forward projects and initiatives that will help realis e their own net zero ambitions.
