Benefits & Opportunities

Benefits & Opportunities

MarramWind has the potential to deliver significant long-term benefits for communities, businesses and the economy of North-East of Scotland and the country more broadly. The project has committed to a broad programme of action in support of supply chain development, skills development, and community wealth building to help maximise the socioeconomic opportunities of MarramWind at a local, regional and national level.

Supporting a Just Energy Transition

As one of the world's largest floating offshore wind projects currently in development, MarramWind is expected to stimulate substantive infrastructure investment, job creation and the growth of a highly skilled workforce., particularly in the North-East of Scotland where there is a clear opportunity to leverage the region’s renowned energy heritage in the development, construction and operations of the windfarm. Through initiatives focused on skills, training and workforce development, the project aims to help people access new career opportunities and support the transition of workers from traditional energy industries into renewable energy roles.

MarramWind is envisaged to create a wide range of supply chain opportunities across sectors including engineering, fabrication, construction, ports and harbours, logistics, vessel operations, environmental services and long-term operations and maintenance. The project’s ambitious plans to maximise Scottish and UK supply chain content are presented in the MarramWind Supply Chain Development Statement (SCDS), which sets out our commitments for supply chain expenditure for each phase of the windfarm. These commitments are reflected in value of the contracts awarded by the project to date, over 90% of which have been placed with UK registered companies, including over 50% with Scotland registered companies.

Supply Chain Development Statement

The MarramWind SCDS sets out our commitment to using Scottish and UK suppliers to develop, build and operate the windfarm project. It also includes the actions we will take in support of supply chain and skills development within the North-East and Scotland more broadly.

Investing in the Local Economies & Communities

In addition to being a nationally significant renewable energy project, MarramWind is envisaged to be an important regional and local asset for the North-East. To date, over 90% of MarramWind’s Scottish supply chain contracts have been placed with companies registered in Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire, which collectively account for over 50% of the project’s total supply chain spend. While the share of regional expenditure is envisaged to change as the project progressed towards construction and into operation, the project will continue to pursue opportunities to harness local and regional expertise, so that as much of the value of the windfarm is retained within the North-East as possible.

Alongside economic benefits, MarramWind is committed to supporting local communities to help them realise lasting social value from the wind farm. This will include community benefit funding, investment in education and STEM engagement, support for apprenticeships and work experience opportunities, and collaboration with local partners to help address barriers to employment in the local area. Through ongoing engagement and partnership working, MarramWind aims to ensure that the benefits of the project are shared locally and contribute to thriving, resilient communities across the region.

The project’s commitments to maximising the social and economic value of are set out in the MarramWind Socio-economic Action Plan (SEAP), which was submitted as part of the project’s onshore and offshore planning application.

Socio-Economic Action Plan

The MarramWind Socio-Economic Action Plan (SEAP) sets out how SPR will develop, build and operate MarramWind in a manner that maximises social and economic benefits for the North-East economy and Scotland more broadly. Produced in conjunction with AECOM the SEAP sets out the actions for:

  • •    Supporting the Supply Chain
