Meet the Future of Renewable Energy: SPR’s First Onshore Apprentices Graduate - and a New Generation Begins
At ScottishPower Renewables, we believe the future of energy starts with people - and we’re thrilled to celebrate a major milestone in our journey to build that future.
Ben and Denver, our very first Onshore Operational Technician apprentices, have officially completed their four-year programme. From day one, they’ve been learning, growing, and getting stuck into the real work of powering a cleaner, greener world. Now, they’re fully qualified technicians, ready to make their mark in the field.
The apprenticeship starts with three months at college, followed by six months of intensive training at ScottishPower’s training centre, followed by hands-on experience out in the field. Along the way, they earned industry-recognised qualifications - including City & Guilds certifications and an HNC in Electrical Engineering. But more than that, they gained confidence, skills, and a sense of purpose.
They’re not alone. Fellow apprenticeship participants Nadir Mouffok and Dean Tyrrell also completed the programme and shared what it meant to them:
“Gaining valuable skills and knowledge through a hands-on approach along with applying the theoretical aspects of electrical engineering principles studied in college.” – Nadir Mouffok
“The chance to develop my interpersonal skills working with a range of different people with different characters.” – Dean Tyrrell
And just as we celebrate these achievements, we’re also welcoming the next wave of talent. On 1st September, Harry Officer, Robbie Brown, Ben Marshall and Kyle Muirhead became SPR’s first craft apprentices when they joined the new three-year Fitting Craft Apprenticeship. They’ll be training to become fully qualified electrical fitters within our O&M Field Ops ENOPS team.
Each of them brings something unique to the table, but they all share a passion for renewables and a drive to learn:
“Working for SPR attracted me as renewable energy is going to have a massive impact in the future and that is very interesting. I also enjoy hands-on work.” – Harry Officer
“I was drawn to ScottishPower’s apprenticeship programme because of its reputation for high-quality training and its commitment to renewable energy and sustainability.” – Robbie Brown
SPR’s Onshore Construction & Operations Director Ross Galbraith said, “It’s fantastic to see our first apprentices complete the programme and new ones just starting out. These schemes aren’t just about training - they’re about giving people the chance to build meaningful careers in clean energy. We’re proud to support them every step of the way as they help us build a green future.”
At SPR, we’re not just investing in infrastructure - we’re investing in people. Our apprenticeship programmes are designed to give young people the tools, experience, and support they need to thrive in the energy sector. It’s about building careers, shaping futures, and creating a workforce that’s ready to lead the transition to net zero.
Congratulations to Ben, Denver, Dean, and Nadir on your achievements. And a warm welcome to Harry, Robbie, Kyle and Ben - we’re thrilled to have you join the SPR family and excited for what’s ahead.
