Dersalloch BESS

Location

The BESS is located approximately 7km east of Straiton, South Ayrshire, within the existing Dersalloch Windfarm boundary.

Current Stage

A planning application under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 was submitted to the Energy Consents Unit in November 2020, and a decision is expected in September 2021.

Project History

Dersalloch BESS is a 30MW battery storage project which will support Dersalloch Windfarm and provide grid stability and support services to the wider network. This project was one of many co-located BESS options proposed in 2020. A screening request was submitted to the Energy Consents Unit in June 2020, and the development was confirmed as non-EIA in November 2020.

Assuming consent is granted, construction will begin in Spring 2022, with the site expected to be fully operational in 2023.

Project Description

ScottishPower Renewables aims to install 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of energy storage technology by 2030; as we install more renewable generation on the network, we need to ensure that we can keep the electricity grid stable and secure during periods where the energy produced by renewable sources doesn’t match the demand. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) allow excess generation capacity to be stored until it is needed.

By locating this BESS within the existing Dersalloch Windfarm, we can ensure that more electricity generated by the windfarm is used and provides stability and security to the local electricity network without installing a lot of new infrastructure.
