CScottishPower Renewables (SPR) will host two public information days on 29th and 30th July to discuss their initial plans for a third phase of their Beinn an Tuirc Windfarm on the Kintyre peninsula. The project is called Beinn an Tuirc Phase 3.
SPR has operated the original 30 megawatt (MW) Beinn an Tuirc Windfarm, near Campbeltown, for more than a decade. In this period the company has contributed almost £600,000 in community benefit payments from this and its other windfarms in the region (Cruach Mhor and Clachan Flats), which has helped to support a wide range of local projects. This includes:
- Maintenance and upkeep of the Kintyre Way and Cowal Way walking routes
- Display boards at Inveraray Bell Tower
- Largieside Ploughing Match
- Work experience places and an interactive exhibition kiosk for ‘Here We Are Cairndow’
- Installation of a hearing loop at Glenary & Inveraray Parish Church
- Refurbishment, maintenance and upgrade to Campbeltown Picture House and several village halls including Peninver, Clachan and Whitehouse
Construction on Beinn an Tuirc Phase 2 is currently underway with tower sections from the plant at Cambeltown due to be delivered to site over the next few months with the final turbines to be installed before the end of 2013. An area has been identified to the south of the site for a further extension. This proposal is in the early stages of development and SPR has started detailed environmental and technical studies. The information days will provide members of the public with an opportunity to meet the project team, find out more about the work underway and to ask any questions they may have. They are planned for the following dates:
- Campbeltown, Town Hall, 29th July, 3pm until 7pm
- Carradale, Village Hall, 30th July, 3pm until 7pm
John Alexander, Project Director at ScottishPower Renewables, said: “We believe in open early consultation and look forward to meeting members of the local community to receive feedback on our initial proposals. This early consultation will ensure that input from the community will help to shape the design of this windfarm.
“Members of our construction team will also be on hand to discuss the ongoing work on Beinn an Tuirc Windfarm Phase 2 and members of our operations team will also be available to discuss Beinn an Tuirc Windfarm and opportunities for local businesses to provide services in the future.
“At ScottishPower Renewables we work hard to maximise the benefits our developments. As well as seeking to support local employment, it’s great to see that ScottishPower Renewables projects in this region have been able to support local community initiatives with almost £600,000 of funding. We recognise that our projects will be part of a local community for a number of years, and we want them to play a positive role in these communities.”
