Golden Eagle Habitat, Beinn an Tuirc, Argyll & Bute

Located north of Campbeltown on the Kintyre Peninsula, Beinn an Tuirc is a prime example of ScottishPower Renewables' environmentally responsible approach to windfarm development.

The windfarm incorporates a £2 million habitat management scheme funded by ScottishPower, to enhance foraging habitat for a pair of golden eagles. This is the biggest land management scheme of its type in the UK. A ranger, responsible for the grounds for the eagles, manages over 10 square kilometres of moorland.

A 2005 report on the project so far found:

• The eagles were avoiding the area of the Beinn an Tuirc windfarm
• The birds were hunting extensively over the adjacent habitat management area and
• Numbers of Red Grouse using the 450 hectares of newly-established moorland were comparable with those on established moorland habitat. The report can be downloaded at:

In addition to this, ScottishPower Renewbles' has provided £20,000 of funding towards the Black Grouse Recovery Project in Argyll and Bute and has planted a new native woodland to enhance their habitat within the vicinity of Beinn an Tuirc windfarm.
